The footwear segment occupies the seventh position in the GDP participating with 2%. Brazilian industry produces approximately 700 millions of pairs annually exporting over 194 millions of pairs in 2004. There are over 6000 industries being 700 of them active exporters and located in different states. The major producers are located in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Paraíba and Ceará. According to the data from Abicalçados, over 200 thousand people work directly in the footwear industry. The Brazilian Industrial Park is one of the most modern in the world.
About 80 countries import shoes from Brazil, generating revenues in the order of $ 1.8 billion. The main national products buyer is The United states followed by the United Kingdom, Argentina, Mexico and Canada.





Brazilian sector has surpassed the growth perspectives of the international market in 2004 closing the year with revenues in the order of US$ 1.806 billion and 17% more than in 2003. The last time the industry had registered such performance was in 1993, when the export have amounted US$ 1.846 billion.
