As one of the players of the global market, Brazilian paper and cellulose sector, which has an annual production of 9.4 millions of tons, it occupies the seventh position in the cellulose world market, and the eleventh in the producers of paper and an annual volume of 8.2 millions of tons of paper.

Nowadays, the sector is, comprised of 220 companies spread around in 450 districts, throughout 16 states in all five Brazilian regions generating 100 thousand direct jobs in the industry and forest with revenues in the order of R$ 23.1 billion. In 2004, US$ 3.1 billion were exported (reaching the highest productivity average rate with 40m³ per hectare/year), with a positive commercial balance in the order of US$ 2.5 billion and R$ 2.2 billion in taxes.

The numbers from Bracelpa – Brazilian Association of Cellulose and Paper show an increment of 1.2% on the paper sales in the domestic market until January 2005. A percentage considered as an adjustment. The production of the Brazilian Paper Industry has grown 3.6% jumping to 8.2 millions of tons in 2004. The export has increased in 4% totalizing 1.8 millions of tons. However, regarding the Cellulose the production increased 4.8% jumping to 9.5 Thousands of tons. The export has increased in 7. 2% reaching 4.9 thousands of tons. The sector is expected to produce 10. 1 millions of tons of cellulose in 2005. Brazil, due to the high productivity of its forests and knowledge developed and acquired by its industries and research institutions is becoming very prominent in the segment.
